Internship Opportunities
There are a wide variety of internship possibilities open to students majoring in physics. Summer is the most popular time to take an internship and you should start planning in the fall semester for the following summer since many deadlines for applications are early in the New Year. Internships can be very valuable in guiding you toward a specific career and in forming direct connections with companies that you are interested in for future full time employment. Internships within the Department of Physics, at National Laboratories or participation in a summer program at a University, such as the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored by the NSF, are an excellent introduction to basic research and the techniques involved and provides a valuable experience that will help you in deciding whether graduate school would be a good option.
